U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expanding their pilot program which allowed carriers to pay their BorderCrossing fees on a trip per trip basis nationwide. The changes to the program will allow carriers to pay for their fees in advance so their Professional Transport Operators don't have to pay cash at the primary inspection line or be referred to secondary to pay the fees.
Carriers who's individual trucks do not cross the border more than 30 times a year may also elect to pay on a per crossing basis since it may be more cost effective than paying the annual border crossing fee. This payment process also makes sense for carrier's who's specific trucks may be coming off lease, sold to another carrier or the truck's specific operating lanes may be changing or they have introduced a truck into their fleet later in the year. Carriers who elect to use this process must ensure their operators have proof of payment when they cross to minimize the potential of delays.
