Every five years the World Customs Organization introduces new and eliminates existing tariffs to modernize the international customs tariffs to track the commodities trading around the world. Countries like Canada also introduce changes to their tariffs along with the other government department / agencies regulations to coincide with the tariff changes. This year the tariff changes are significant which intern will require importers and customs brokers to review and reclassify many of commodities crossing the border. The changes will also require the importers and customs brokers to review the other government department / agencies requirements and update their databases. This will undoubtedly will take importers and customs brokers additional time to complete and submit their declarations which intern may have the potential to increase carrier delays. Carriers who wish to minimize potential delays should work with their clients and shippers to look for methods to improve early communication as a strategy to keep their trucks moving.
